  • The contract was carried out over a period of 3 months and entailed the dynamic compaction of 85 000m2 to depths of densification ranging from 3m to 5m.


Scorpion Zinc Mine Project near Rosh Pinah, in Namibia

Dura Soletanche BAchy successfully completed the dynamic compaction (DC) contract at Scorpion Zinc Mine Project near Rosh Pinah, in Namibia. Rosh Pinah lies in a remote area in the southern parts of Namibia.

This is frontier country, isolated by rough terrain which meant logistical planning and utilisation of human and other resources had to be optimised.

SPJV (Scorpion Project Management JV) a Joint Venture between Bateman and SNC-Lavalin acted as consulting engineers. Specialist geotechnical consulting input for SPJV was provided by Semane Consulting Engineers.

Dura Soletanche Bachy took up the challenge to meet a critical programme which required 5 crawler cranes including at Liebherr HD841 Crawler Crane which was imported from Europe. This contract was the first for the Liebherr HD841 in Southern Africa and achieved benefits in cost saving and increased productivity.

The soil improvement, by means of dynamic compaction, was achieved by dropping pounders , varying in mass up to 15 tonnes, over a considerable height into the soil being compacted. The five crawler cranes were capable of applying 225 ton metre per blow. The compaction was carried out in three phases comprising primary, secondary and ironing phases. In the primary phase the prints were spaced at 6m centres.
